Abstract

An important contribution of quantitative genetics to plant breeding is the possibility to obtain an estimate of genetic parameters to aid the selection in a direct way. Aiming to characterize and to evaluate the genetic gains, 32 genotypes of common bean were evaluated: three commercial cultivars and 29 lines. A completely randomized block design with four replications was used in the 1995/96 crop season in Lages, Santa Catarina. The results demonstrated that the tested black bean lines had a wide genetic variability for ali studied characters, indicating that classic methods of improvement should be preferred. The direct selection was more efficicnt, compared to the indirect selection, for the characters plant height and 1000 grains weight. The indirect selection evidcnced largar genetic gain for the characters: vegetative cycle, crop cycle and height of insertion of the first pod. The character insertion of the first pod was highly i nfi uenced by the environment, thus a selection pressure should be put in practice for this character, in generations with high levei of homozygosis.
