Agronomic evaluation of potential rootstocks for peach trees

Peach production depends on the appropriate choice of rootstock, which influences phenological behavior, vigor, productivity, and fruit quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of the Chimarrita cultivar grafted onto 27 rootstocks. The experiment was conducted in Veranópolis, Rio Grande do Sul, in a completely randomized design with three replications, throughout the growing seasons of 2022, 2023, and 2025. Phenological variables, vegetative vigor, production, fruit weight, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA) and SS/TA (ratio) were analyzed. Phenological behavior was similar among rootstocks, with slight variations in budburst and flowering. The vigor of the scion cultivar showed greater growth conferred by the Cascata 534 rootstock and a dwarfing effect by Flordaguard. Production was influenced by rootstocks and years of evaluation, with Tsukuba 2, I-67-55-9, and I-93-27 standing out for higher yield and productive stability. Fruit weight varied among genotypes, with a tendency for larger fruits in rootstocks that induced lower productive load. Quality attributes were affected by rootstocks, with an inverse relationship between SS and TA throughout the cycles. Capdeboscq, Chorão, Tsukuba 2 CPACT, and I-67-52-44 showed better balance between sugars and acidity, reflecting fruits with higher ratio values.
