Abstract

Barbados gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata Miller) is a woody cactaceous and scandent large-sized species, native in tropical and subtropical american zones, since Florida until Argentina. Is an important genetic resource, pre- senting multiple uses in Brazilian culinary, in landscaping and in the popular phytoterapy. In order to test morphogenic response in the in vivo e in vitro propagation, experiments was executed. Firstly, it was tested rooting from three types of cuts in three substrates with and without intermittent nebulization. After 17 days, 91 % of the cuts formed roots and no significant effects were recorded among treatments in root number, root length and shoot number in the aerial part. Next, seeds were established in substrate and in vitro. Subsequently, conditions to in vitro multiplication and rooting and to acclimatization were tested. In vitro multiplication was significantly higher in 1 mg BA L-1 and in vitro rooting occurred in medium without phytoregulator. After six months in subcultures, the plants were successfully acclimatizated with 100 % of survival, with greater development under nebulization. The species presents high morphogenic potential and conditions to vegetative propagation were recorded.
