Abstract

Siphocampylus betulifolius is a Campanulaceae perennial herb endemic to southern Brazil, with rare occur- rence. Due to the continuous flowering it is important genetic resource for indoor decoration. The aim of this study was to test the efficiency of daminozide in plant height reduction, as a way to adapt it as a container plant. Seedlings were established in pots (1.5 L), three plants each, and received five foliar applications with 0, 2500 and 4500 mg/L of dami- nozide each. During 19 weeks vegetative growth and flowering were evaluated. There was a 41 % and 64 % reduction in plant height, with 2500 and 4500 mg L–1, respectively, as well as reduction in the leaves and shoots number. The flower buds number did not differ, but the open flowers number was lower in the presence of daminozide, independent of concentration. The use of plant regulator daminozide was effective in reducing plant height of S. betulifolius.
