Abstract

An experiment was carried ou t at Lages Experimental Station (Empasc) during 1978/1980, to compare 15 cultivars of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The soil was a humic Cambisol (Haplumbrept); the climate of the region is Cfb according to Koeppen's classification. The following variables were evaluated: total and seasonal dry matter (DM) production, and correlation between plant height and DM production. Data related to DM production were submitted to analysis of variante and compared using the Scott-Knott test at the 5% levei. Cultivars Empasc 301 and Asso L17 presenteei the highest leveis of productivity and also the best seasonal distribution. The first cultivar is from local seed production, while the others are imported from Europe. The correlation coefficient between plant height and DM yield varicd from 0.69 to 0.88, being this parameter useful for research purposes and at farm levei, making possible the correct pasture management.
