The new economic scene drawn by the opening of the economy and market in the last decade unchains a series of challenges to the dairy sector, resulting in the need for some adjustments in the search to soothe problems from structural and technological nature as well as social ones. With the aim of identifying the existence of peculiar characteristics in each of the production systems, inside the same producers (families) stratum, this work proposes to study the organizational forms of family dairy production units in RS, through different typologies: modern conventionl, transitional and traditional. In the study were considered hand labor used in the activity, insertion on the community, producers reprofissionalization and their socio cultural identity, notions of quality of life and house substructure. The conclusion was that dairy family producers are migrating from the traditional model to the modern one, sugesting that the dairy activity, in the last years, is a sector to which investments are been directed in the small farms.
