Abstract

The Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is the infectious agent responsible for a persistent infection in cattle which causes severe losses to the livestock industry. The 'ossos in dairy herds are estimated in 10% of milk yield. Caule infected with BLV serve as a source of virus transmission to susceptible caule. For control or eradication programs it is important to identify the seropositive animais. The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of antibodies against BLV in dairy cattle imported from Uruguay to farms of the Rio Grande do Sul state. A total of 692 serum samples were tested through the agar-gel immunodiffusion test. The number of seropositive cattle was 15.60%. The resulta showed in despite of the warning given by some researchers, many animais are often imported without care regarding to the bovine leukosis status.
