Participatory approach of hunters in sanitary surveillance for classical swine fever in wild boars in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil
Abstract
Classical Swine Fever (CSF) is a viral disease, which affects domestic pigs and wild boars. Rio Grande do Sul is free of this disease, with international recognition by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), since 2015. In order to maintain this recognition, it is necessary to prove the absence of viral circulation of CSF in the wild boars which requires the collection of samples from this population. To this end, in 2017, the official veterinary service of Rio Grande do Sul published legislations regulating the participation of hunters in this activity, as well as providing training in monitoring and sanitary surveillance of these animals, which proved to be extremely beneficial, comparing the number of samples obtained from 2012 to 2016 (n = 56) from 2017 to 2018 (n = 567). Thus, with the establishment of this partnership, it is possible to sanitary surveillance in wild boars in the State, which in addition to other related activities provides the maintenance of status already obtained.
