Initial fruiting of the Pindo Palm (Butia odorata) progenies
Abstract
The Pindo palm is a palm tree native to Rio Grande do Sul, where it forms an important ecosystem known as palmar or butiazal. This species also has great economic potential, mainly related to the quality of its fruits. The introduction in cultivation systems can be an alternative of conservation and economic use of the Pindo palm, but that lacks basic information regarding productive aspects. The time required for individuals to start fruiting from planting is an extremely relevant aspect; however, there is little information on this characteristic and the genetic influence on this factor. In order to obtain this information, in September 2008, 112 seedlings from 11 progenies selected in three different areas were planted at the experimental unit of the Research Center in Viamão. For each progeny, 11 seedlings with 3 x 4 meter spacing were planted. After 10 years, significant variations were observed among the progenies evaluated in the diameter and height parameters of the plant. The proportion of plants in the productive phase, within each progeny, ranged from 20 to 100%, corresponding to 53.6% of the total planted individuals. There was a positive and significant correlation between the proportion of plants in the reproductive phase and growth averages obtained among progenies. Thus, larger Pindo Palm trees associated with different progenies, produced fruits earlier, characteristics that have been shown to be influenced by genetic factors. The progenies ES and V1 showed favorable characteristics for continuity in the processes of selection and breeding.
